Rule of Threes

In journalism school, you learn about the rule of threes. Three sources on a fact means it's likely true. Threes make for great and memorable writing (e.g. huff and puff and blow your house down). Celebrity deaths happen in 3s. And three is the sweetest number on this journey so far.

In what felt like the blink of an eye, doctors whisked Missy away Wednesday morning and just as quickly returned with her absent three eggs. Three miraculously and medically created eggs. Three eggs we hope will have the right mojo to lead to greater things.

After all, three is better than none, a real possibility given the fragility of the female system. Dr. Silber and Dr. DeRosa both talked with us before the procedure, reminding us of the real possibility that we may come up short. Dr. Silber said most clinics in the world would have shut the book on cases like ours, women whose bodies did not respond abundantly to the medication. They avoid such couples to maintain their success rate, a key marketing tool in the fertility business.

But not Dr. Silber. He believes that any shot at conception is one worth taking, even if it is only thre eggs. The one thing Missy does have going for her is age. A woman of similar circumstance at age 35 or older would have a much lower chance of yielding any fruits.

While the glow is brighter, we are still far from seeing the light. Those three eggs will now rendezvous with my DNA hoping to sow some seeds. Again no guarantees of sucess. If they don't get along, we're back where we started.

But if boy meets girl, girl likes boy, and an embryo comes out of this meeting, then the couple moves up to a d-lux apartment in Missy's uterus. That would be Saturday morning.

Which brings me back to the first three words Missy was able to articulate in her medicated state: Praise the Lord.
